Oprah Winfrey, who is known all over the world as the ‘Queen of Media’, is known to most people. Whose name is always at the top position in the list of the most powerful women in the world? Although today she is at the top of the list of the most influential people in the world, she was also stuck in the depths of poverty and depression. At an early age, they faced difficult situations that they could never have imagined and finally achieved extraordinary success.
Early Days:
Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954 in the city. Oprah’s mother was a teenager and single when she gave birth to Oprah. She used to earn her living by working as a maid in others’ houses. As he had very little time from work, he kept Oprah with her mother. Her mother’s situation was not so good that Oprah had to use potato sacks as ‘clothes’, sometimes eating sandwiches given to her by someone else. Oprah stayed there until the age of six. Her grandmother taught her to read before the age of three and took her to the local church, where she developed a connection with Bible verses. Oprah started reciting Bible verses so fluently that people started calling him ‘The
Preacher’. i.e. those who preach on religious subjects. But later, due to a dire financial situation, grandmother handed over Oprah to her mother. Now Oprah was in a worse situation because she had no one to pay attention to her caste and her mother was away for work so she could not spend much time with her daughter. Oprah was alone for a few years and her friendship was reduced. Just like that, their mother gave birth to another daughter and now it was difficult for them to take care of two daughters. He kept Oprah with her stepfather for a few days. When she came back from her father to her mother, her mother had given birth to a son. While all these incidents were happening, some wrong things were also happening with Oprah.
Molestation and Mental Torture:
Some people nearby tried to molest her and this continued to happen from the age of nine to thirteen but due to threats, she could not tell anyone, taking advantage of her childhood and suffering a lot of physical and mental suffering. Tired of all this trouble, they decided to run away from there and stole some money from the house, and left the city, but they had no idea that a big disaster was waiting for them. Due to physical trauma and lack of proper guidance, she became pregnant at the age of 14, but due to the small stature and underdevelopment of the fetus, the infant could not survive. Oprah was going through a major trauma when she was a child (and the trauma was so deep that she decided not to become a mother and refused to get married) and then, a few days later, her mother found her and took her home. He was admitted to the high school but he did not fit in with the high standard of living there. Oprah started stealing money from the house to get even with them. When their mother came to know about this, they both started quarreling. Tired of this trouble, he sent Oprah back to her stepfather. This one decision of her mother was very beneficial for her life.
Turning Point:
Vernon, Oprah’s stepfather, was a strict disciplinarian, provided a safe environment at home, supported Oprah, and made her education her first priority. Here she gained momentum in her studies and became known as a brilliant student. She started participating in everything. On the last day of school, she was offered to read the news on a local news channel. While doing this work, he continued her further education. At the age of 17, she won two beauty contests. After this, he got an offer from a big channel and the opportunity was so good that he left for Maryland without completing her graduation. She was the first African American woman to get this opportunity, but her boss didn’t like her getting too emotional to read the news, so he fired her. Now the question was again what to do. That’s how a new opportunity came to him.
Career and career:
He took up a job as a host on the talk show ‘People Are Talking’ and hosted the show for the next seven years. In 1984, she moved to Chicago and became the host of the WLS TV show ‘Yem Chicago’. The show initially ran on low ratings but when Oprah Winfrey became the host of the show, its ratings improved and it entered the list of top shows. Later the name of the show was changed to ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show. First, the show used to run for half an hour but as the number of viewers increased, the time of the show was also extended. The show ran for more than two decades and aired 5000 episodes in 24 seasons of the show.
In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President of the United States, Barack Obama. She was also included in Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s billionaires, becoming the first African American woman to receive such a designation. She started the ‘Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls with the feeling that she has to give back to society even after getting so much fame. In recognition of her contribution to society, he was honored with a special Oscar Award in 2012 by the ‘Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Thoughts by Oprah Winfrey:
Be grateful for what you have; You will have more. If we focus on what we don’t have, we will never feel like we have enough.
The more you live life with joy and enthusiasm, the more happy moments will come in your life.
Surround yourself only with people who help you succeed and become who
You believe you are, it doesn’t matter what you think or what you want to be.
Make your wounds your wisdom.
I don’t believe in failure. It’s not a failure if you enjoy the process.
If you want to do something good, you have to go out and do something good.
Once you face the thing that you fear the most, which fear automatically falls away.
Your job is not just to do what your parents, your teachers, and society tell you to do, but to find out what your heart is trying to tell you and act accordingly.
I think luck is when your preparation meets opportunity.
You can have all but not all at once.
You can either see yourself as a wave in the ocean or you can see yourself as the ocean.
I see the earth as a school and my life as a classroom.
Every setback you face isn’t meant to knock you down, and even if you fall down, you’re not a failure until you get back up.
